Joan S. Wrench

“Baby Doll Head Garden” (at my home).

My paintings involve a multi-step process which begins by creating hand traced monotypes on thin paper.  I sift through these drawings and look for images which appeal to me and which I then cut up and collage onto the canvas.  As I paint, I respond to the collaged shapes, often transforming them into something altogether different.  Starting with the idea for a certain color, I begin to work into the painting, focusing on subtle color transitions. Adding layer upon layer of paint, I sculpt the surface of the canvas, drawing into it with pencil, ink and sticks to create a richly textured surface.
